Shimmering Glass offers a variety of styles of Fused Glass Vases created using several different techniques. Fused Glass Vases are created through a process called "Slumping" or "Dropping".  From delicate vases that look like multicolored flowers to "handkerchief vases', slumped vases that fold and bends -  glass on glass - to create a wide variety of unique shapes and styles. Any style, any color, A vase from Shimmering Glass is truly a work of art.

New Fused Glass Ribbon Vases from Shimmering Glass - features "Ribbons of Glass" flowing movement, like liquid glass.

Fused Glass Ribbon Vases are created in the same process as a "fused glass handkerchief style vase" - the only difference is the piece of fused glass you use when time to 'slump'.

Fused glass ribbon vases are formed by first selecting the type of glass you want to use - we often use a single piece of streaky glass but have also used various shades of colored glass or glass with contrasting colors. You begin with a square shaped piece usually around 8 to 10 inches square. Then cutting curved or straight strips of glass you piece together the glass to form what looks like a wagon wheel, with the square in the center and the wheel with spokes surrounding the square.  Add clear strips of glass over the colored glass to add depth, thickness and strength and you are now ready for fusing. Slumping the glass, you place the fused piece on your vase former (we use the 10 inch steel former) making sure to carefully center th glass on the steel form beneath it. As a precautionary measure to help get more fluid movement on the top of the vase, we will often place pieces of fiber in small piles at varying heights around the base of the steel former you will be slumping on. As the glass folds and stretches during the slumping process, this will help keep the glass from hitting the bottom of the kiln and if you have placed it correctly, will add nice undulations to the ribbons of glass at the top of the vase.

Handkerchief Vases from Shimmering Glass get their name because  they look like a Kleenex being pulled from a box. Strange name true, but use your imagination as you browse these pages and we think you'll see what we mean. These dynamic fused glass vases are perfect for holding flowers, either fresh or dried and are extremely beautiful when used with lighted candles! The flame flickers and light dances through the curves and folds of the glass, highlighting colors and teasingly beautiful!

"Slumping"   Slumping glass is the process you use to put a shape to the fused glass you have created. Once you have fused glass to specific size and shape, place it over  or in a form, heat the kiln to 1250 degrees and allow the glass to form to the shape you have placed beneath it.  Forms for Slumping Glass are either Stainless Steel or made from ceramics or clay. The type of form you are using, the item you are trying to create and the material of your form will help to determine whether you place the glass into or on top of the form itself. For example, clay and glass cool or heat, expand or contract at different temperatures. Slumping glass onto a clay mold improperly, could cause your fused glass to break during the cooling or heating phases of the slumpNothing breaks your heart more than to see (or hear) broken glass on the bottom of your kiln after you have attempted a slump!

Slumping a Vase is done by placing glass over what looks like a stainless steel coffee cup (about 12 oz size). Place the glass, centered over the 'form' making sure the form is tall enough to keep the glass from reaching the bottom of the kiln when it reaches it's peak temperature. The final shape of your vase will vary pending on the original shape  you created with your Fused Glass, the length of time you 'slump' the glass and several other factors.  The shape your original glass is in can have a dramatic effect on the final look of your vase. Circles, squares, hexagons and other geometric shapes of Fused Glass are "slumped" to create the Fused Glass Vases you get from Shimmering Glass and each shape will slump just a little bit differently from the others
.

 "Dropping" a Vase

Dropping is a technique that takes a little more time and patience, but the outcome can be quite dramatic. Take your piece of Fused Glass and place it on a form with a hole in the center. Some "drop rings" have round holes, some square, and the resulting 'Drop Vase" shape will vary based on the type of drop ring mold you use. Heat the kiln to a temperature between 1310 and 1350 degrees. As the glass becomes more "liquid like", the center of the fused glass piece will begin to drop through the hole. The time you need to allow the heated glass to "drop" through the hole will vary depending on the size of the hole, the thickness and size of the  original piece of fused glass you are attempting to drop, and the shape you would like to achieve when it has finished. Drop in long enough and you can create a "free standing" drop vase, drop your fused glass for a little less time and you have a beautiful vase that will look elegant in the right "stand".

Ultimately, the final look of your "drop" vase will depend on your level of patience in waiting for the glass to take the shape you desire. You can also get creative by changing the shape of the hole through which the glass will drop, by adding other elements to your "dropping" project, like using a special "rope" or "fiber paper"  to add to the shape of your final Drop Vase.
